Reasons to visit
The volcano group in Datong City, Shanxi Province is mainly distributed in the eastern part of the Datong Basin. It is one of the Quaternary volcanic groups in my country. It stopped erupting about 60,000 years ago, so it is also a famous extinct volcano group in North China. There are currently more than 30 known volcanoes, mainly distributed in the eastern part of the Datong Basin, which can be divided into four regions: east, west, south and north. The eastern district is in the area of Xubao and Shenquan Temple. West District Zhizhuayuan and the area north of Xiping. The Southern District is south of the Sanggan River. The North District is around Gushan, north of Datong City. According to the external morphological characteristics of volcanoes, they can be divided into four categories: one is dome-shaped, composed of basalt flows and has no crater, such as Gushan and Emaodan. The second is shell-like, composed of basalt, such as Xiaojiayaotou volcano and Daxinzhuang volcano. The third one is semicircular, formed by volcanic eruptions erupting along the fissures in the front of the mountain and flowing along the hillside. The fourth is horseshoe-shaped, which is composed of interlayered basalt flows and volcanic debris. After the volcano is formed, the flowing water cuts through the crater, shaped like a horseshoe, such as Dongping Mountain, Jinshan, etc. Except for the above-mentioned horseshoe-shaped volcanoes, which have been cut through by flushing, the rest only have narrow and shallow valleys around the cones, indicating that the volcanic landforms are still in the early stages of erosion. Judging from the contact between the volcanic eruptions and the overlying underlying strata, the Datong volcanic group is the product of multiple activities at the end of the Pliocene and at the beginning of the late Pleistocene Malan loess accumulation. The earlier activities were in the North and East areas, followed by the South area. , the west side is newer.
