The Iron Tower, also known as the "Kaibao Temple Tower", is located in the Iron Tower Park in the northeast corner of Kaifeng City. Because the tower is entirely inlaid with brown glazed tiles, it looks like iron from a distance, so it is called the "Iron Tower". The Iron Tower was built in the first year of Emperor You of the Northern Song Dynasty (1049) and has a history of more than 900 years. In 1961, it was designated as a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council. The tower is in the shape of an equilateral octagon, with a total of 13 floors and a height of 55.88 meters. The width of each side of the bottom floor is 4.16 meters, which decreases from floor to floor. The body of the tower is covered with patterned bricks, with more than 50 kinds of patterns including flying apsaras, unicorns, Bodhisattvas, musicians, lions, etc. It is beautiful in shape and vivid in expression, and can be called a masterpiece of brick carving art in the Song Dynasty. The Iron Tower is famous both at home and abroad for its outstanding architectural art. Its design is exquisite and its structure is solid. It still stands tall despite earthquakes, river floods, violent storms and man-made damage.
