Opening Hours
The Liuyuan Garden is located outside Changmen in Suzhou. It was originally the east garden of Xu Taishi, the minister of Taipu Temple during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. The garden towel rockery was created by Zhou Bingzhong (Tokichen), a famous stone stacker. During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, Liu Shu rebuilt his hometown as Hanbi Villa, also known as Liu Garden. The twelve Taihu stone peaks gathered in the garden are a wonder. During the Xianning period, many gardens in Suzhou were damaged, but this garden alone survived. In the early years of Guangxu, it was acquired by Shengkang, repaired and expanded, and renamed Liuyuan. The whole park now covers an area of about 50 acres, and can be roughly divided into four scenic areas: central, east, west and north. They are connected by curved corridors. It is a circuitous and continuous route, reaching more than 700 meters, leading to secluded valleys and beautiful scenery. The middle part is the base of the original Hanbi Villa. There is a wide pond in the middle and mountains in the west and north. The east and south are buildings. The rockery is mainly made of soil and overlaid with yellow stone, giving it a strong and vigorous momentum.
The ancient trees on the mountain are towering into the sky, giving it a dense forest atmosphere. The water streams meandering between the mountains are like the source of the pond. The Hanbi Mountain House and Mingse House in the south of the pond are the upper body of the garden, and the pavilions are like the front cabin. The open hall is like a middle cabin. It is shaped like a painting boat. There is a green shade pavilion on the east side of the pavilion, which is small and elegant. Between the hanging drop near the water and the railing, a landscape painting emerges. There is a climbing corridor on the west side of Hanbi Mountain House, which rises and falls with the mountain, and connects to the Osmanthus Fragrant Pavilion on the top of the mountain. Osmanthus flowers are planted all over the mountain. Every autumn, the fragrance floats and is refreshing. The mountains here are high and the air is cool. Looking around, you can have a panoramic view of Mantong. The small Penglai Island in the pool appears above the blue waves. The Haopu Pavilion, Quxi Tower, West Tower and Qingfeng Pool Pavilion in the east of the pool are hidden among the mountains, rivers and trees, with ups and downs. Well-proportioned. The rocks in the north of the pool are standing tall, and the ravines are looming. The pavilion is high on the hill, and it has the potential to fly in the sky.
There are many gates and deep courtyards in the east. The courtyards are connected with each other through leaky windows, door openings, and verandahs, contrasting with each other, forming a complex of buildings with rich spatial changes in the courtyard space in Suzhou gardens. Tuting Wufengxian Hall is commonly known as Nanmu Hall. The hall is beautifully decorated and elegantly furnished. To the west, there are courtyards such as Hesuo, Stone Forest Courtyard, Yifengxuan, and Huanwo Reading Room. Bamboos and stones lean against the walls, and plantains reflect the windows. The scenery is full of poetry and painting. Linquan Qishuo's Pavilion is the Yuanyang Hall, separated by a floor-to-ceiling cover with carved round holes in the middle. The furnishings in the hall are quaint. In the north of the hall stand the famous three peaks of Liuyuan, with Guanyun Peak in the middle, Ruiyun Peak and Xiuyun Peak standing on the left and right. Guanyun Peak is 6.5 meters high and exquisitely carved. It is said to be a relic of the Song Dynasty's Hua Shi Gang and is the tallest lake stone in the gardens of Jiangnan. In front of the peak stone is Huanyun Marsh, and there are Guanyun Tower, Guanyun Pavilion, Guanyuntai, Qianyun Temple, etc. built around it, all of which are places for viewing stones.
The western part is dominated by rockeries, with alternating earth and rocks, completely natural. The maple trees on the mountain are lush and green, covering the mouth with green shade in midsummer, and the red clouds are like a brocade in late autumn. Zhi Le Pavilion and Shu Xiao Pavilion are looming among the trees. The hips are high and you can look far into the distance, so you can take advantage of the scenic spots in the western suburbs. The cloud wall on the left side of the mountain rises and falls like a dragon. The Qianqu River is winding and the water is gurgling. There is a water pavilion at the east foot of the water pavilion "lively and splashing ground". Lying on the divination of the stream, one has the feeling of endless water flow. The original buildings in the north have long been abandoned, but now bamboo, plums, peaches, and apricots are widely planted, and grape and wisteria trellises are built in "Yuyi Village" and other places. The rest of the land has been turned into a bonsai garden, with lush flowers and trees, still retaining a pastoral feel. The Liuyuan Garden is laid out in a landscape that is suitable for living and traveling, with a dense and dense Fengjian Liubi. The unique stone peak landscape has become an outstanding example of Jiangnan garden art.
