Shanxi Museum is located on the west bank of Fenhe River in Taiyuan City. It is one of the large-scale modern and comprehensive museums. It is a key national construction project during the Ninth Five-Year Plan and is also a cultural infrastructure with a large investment scale since the founding of Shanxi Province. The predecessor of Shanxi Museum was Shanxi Educational Library Museum founded in 1919, and has been renamed many times since then. It has been called Shanxi Provincial Museum since 1953. The foundation stone of the new museum was laid on August 10, 2001. It was completed in 2004 and named Shanxi Museum. As the largest cultural relic collection, protection, research and exhibition center in Shanxi Province, Shanxi Museum covers an area of 168 acres, with a construction area of 51,000 square meters, a total investment of nearly 400 million yuan, and a precious collection of about 400,000 pieces. The basic display of Shanxi Museum is themed "Soul of Jin" and consists of 7 historical and cultural topics including the cradle of civilization, traces of Xia and Shang, hegemony of Jin, national melting pot, Buddhist heritage, hometown of opera, Shanxi merchants of Ming and Qing Dynasties, and civil works, It is composed of five artistic themes: Elites of Landscapes and Rivers, Paintings of Chinese Painting, Fangyuan World, and Art of the Porcelain Garden.
