It is located in the national 5A Yuelu Mountain Scenic Area on the west bank of the Xiangjiang River in Changsha, Hunan. It is a famous university with a long history and great reputation. It originated from Yuelu Academy, one of the four major academies in ancient China. In 1903, the academy was restructured into Hunan College of Higher Education and officially named Hunan University in 1926. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Central People's Government appointed Li Da as the president of Hunan University, and Chairman Mao Zedong personally inscribed the name of the school. In 2000, Hunan University merged with Hunan University of Finance and Economics, which was formerly affiliated with the People's Bank of China, to form a new Hunan University, which is still directly under the Ministry of Education.
