Selin was a great devil who used to live in Doilungdeqen, west of Lhasa. He devoured millions of lives every day, including humans and all animals. No one could do anything about his tyranny. On a good day after a thunderstorm, Guru Padmasambhava, who had been exorcising demons all the way, finally found Selin. So, under the close pursuit of Guru Padmasambhava, Selin fled to a vast and turbid lake south of Gangni Qiangtang. The master ordered Selin never to leave the lake, to repent sincerely in the lake, and not to harm aquatic creatures. He named this lake "Selin Duicuo", which means "Selin Devil Lake". The lake surface of Selincuo is 4,530 meters above sea level. The lake is 72 kilometers long from east to west and 22.8 kilometers wide on average. The eastern part is 40 kilometers wide. The lake area is 1,640 square kilometers, which is the largest inland lake system in Tibet. There are many rivers and lakes in the basin that are interconnected to form a closed inland lake group. In addition to Selincuo, there are 23 satellite lakes such as Gerencuo, Wurucuo, and Rencuo Gongma. Every summer, the lakeside scenery is unique, and various migratory birds live on the small islands in the lake.
