Dongqian Lake is 15 kilometers southeast of Ningbo City. It is named because its land carries water from Qiandai. It was originally Haiji Lake and was developed by the county magistrate Lu Nan Jin Junzhi in the third year of Tang Tianbao (744 AD).

In the first year of Tianxi in the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 1017), the prefect Li Yikang rebuilt it. In the eighth year of Qingli (AD 1048), the county magistrate Wang Anshi dredged it again, rebuilt the lake embankment, and cut weeds. The lake area was gradually stabilized. It is 8.7 kilometers long from north to south. It is about 4.6 kilometers wide from east to west and about 30 kilometers in circumference. The original area of the whole lake is about 22 square kilometers, which is divided into three parts: Guzi Lake, Mei Lake and Waihu. Meihu Lake is now silted up. Now there is a dike on the lake, which is 4 kilometers long from east to west, and the lake is divided into two. The lake is surrounded by mountains and 72 streams gather here, forming a huge natural reservoir. Whenever there is a drought, the sluice is opened to release water, which can irrigate the farmland in Fenghua, Yinxian and Zhenhai townships. It is also a freshwater breeding base, so it is also called Wanjin Lake. Dongqian Lake originally had ten scenic spots: Taogong Gouji, Yuxiang Library, Baibu Towering Green, Xiayu Suolan, Shuanghong Luocai, Erling Sunset, Shanglin Xiaozhong, Luting Suyan, Yinwan Fishing Fire, and Baishi Xianping.
