The Moon Lake was excavated in the tenth year of Tang Zhenguan (636 AD). During the Yuan You period of the Song Dynasty (1086-1094), the Ten Continents of Moon Lake were built. During the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1131-1162 AD), pavilions and towers were built extensively, and four seasonal flowers and trees were planted everywhere, forming a picturesque scene of ten continents on the Moon Lake. These ten continents are: Zhuyu, Yuedao, and Juhuazhou in the east of the lake, Huayu, Zhuzhou, Liuting, and Fangcaozhou in the middle of the lake, and Yanyu, Xueting, and Furongzhou in the west of the lake. In addition, there are three embankments and seven bridges that complement each other. Since the Song and Yuan dynasties, Yuehu has been the academic center of eastern Zhejiang and a gathering place for literati and scholars to rest and gather. Tang Dynasty great poet He Zhizhang, Northern Song Dynasty famous minister Wang Anshi, Southern Song Dynasty prime minister Shi Hao, Song Dynasty famous scholar Yang Jian, Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty great historian Wan Sitong. These influential figures, whether living in seclusion, giving lectures, serving as officials, or writing books, have left indelible marks on the Moon Lake.

The Goryeo Embassy Site and other cultural relics and historical sites on the banks of Moon Lake are also witnesses of cultural exchanges between China and North Korea in history, Due to the lack of dredging for a long time, only four out of ten continents remain in Yuehu. After the liberation, the Moon Lake was heavily dredged, giving it a new look and restoring the interweaving of the "Ten Continents Scenic Area" and the "Three Embankments and Seven Bridges", creating an incredibly beautiful and charming scenery.
